Knobs 261 & 262 are vertical grain Angelique with horizontal grain Bloodwood caps. The Angelique has iridescence on the sides, and the Bloodwood across the top, except where the end grain shows. The Bloodwood iridescence shows in real life, not as the red orange the digital camera sees here, but as a jewel-like, deep ruby glow that seems to come from deeper within the wood than lighter-colored woods. All the knobs, 262, 262 & 263 have at least one superglue base coat, and finish coats of neutral shoe polish, after a high polish with abrasive cloth.
Knob 263 is vertical grain Angelique with a side section of horizontal grain Yellowheart. Since the end grain of the Yellowheart points to the side, most of the iridescence shows on the top, with some on the margins of the side.
This experiment precedes a number of knobs where contrasting ¼” horizontal grain wood glued to ¾” vertical grain wood forms a kind of rotation pointer. Some future knobs will have ¼” Bloodwood glued to ¾” Yellowheart, and ¼” Bubinga (African Rosewood) glued to ¾” Brazilian Cherry. Stay tuned.
