Started on “Fossilized” Eucalyptus Knobs

These knobs come from Cali Bamboo “Fossilized” strand woven solid Eucalyptus flooring samples at Lowe’s, Product Item #759166.  The usable area of the sample is about 4-7/8″ by 3-15/16″ by 17/32″ (122 x 100 x 13 mm), large enough for 20 knobs.  It looks like strips of Eucalyptus are glued together under heat and pressure with some kind of hard plastic or resin.  This material chips less than the “Fossilized” bamboo, but is easier to burn with friction using files to shape and smooth.  Very sharp tools, preferably carbide, need be used to avoid gouging and smearing of the grain.

The following pictures show one knob each in two different orientations to show the dramatic iridescence when this wood is highly polished.  These were finished first with superglue, then with Kiwi neutral shoe polish.

Hints of scarlet show in some of the darker grain, but might dim with exposure to light.
